We start off with an apology about a misstep that may have hurt some of our listeners in the disability community. The episode we address is 130 – Dirt Sorcery and Six Ways with Aidan Wachter. We are truly sorry for not being better about watching our own words and getting better clarity from our guest, which we know is our job. We will try to improve upon that, and thank you to the listener who pointed out our fumble.

If you want some background and perspective on the Sephora witch kit controversy, Fire Lyte of Inciting a Riot has a great post going over many of the key points.

Thanks also to AthenaBeth, whose YouTube channel you should check out! She sent in our (terrifying) rabbit lore in relation to our previous posts on things like lucky rabbit’s feet.

There was also a mention of an episode in which we shared lore on fairies wearing red caps, which is Episode 8 – Magical Media Mania, and there was a follow-up blog post about it as well.

If you have feedback you’d like to share, email us or leave a comment. We’d love to hear from you!

For those who are interested, we also now have a page on Pinterest you might like, called “The Olde Broom.” You can follow us on Instagram or check out our new YouTube channel with back episodes of the podcast and new “Everyday Magic” videos, too! We’re also planning an excursion in early to mid-summer to see the ancient magical artifacts exhibit at the Penn Museum and we’d love for you to join us! More details will be coming soon.

We draw very much upon emails from you, our listeners, for this episode. Thank you! Some of our other sources, influences, and points of interest include:

  • Peter Paddon’s work, particularly on the process of recovering ancestral lore (such as that found in his Grimoire for Modern Cunning Folk).
  • Seriously, check out the Patreon page, because there are some cool perks to being a sponsor
  • We announced we’ll be hosting a get-together of sorts in Philadelphia in March 2017 to see the Penn Museum’s “Magic in the Ancient World” exhibit (along with other fun stuff). We are hoping to do this along with Chris & Tara from Down at the Crossroads, because they’re awesome people and will add a very magical touch to the event
  • We have a couple of posts on mojo bags, and there’s also a book on them called The Hand Book, by Talia Felix (I’ve not read it, but it looked the most interesting of the possible options available on Amazon).

We very much want your ghost stories! We’ll be doing a live Mixlr broadcast in October, and we’d love for you to join us for that and share your spookiest and ghastliest tales. If you can’t be with us live, feel free to email us your stories, or leave us a voice mail at (442)-99-WITCH (which is 442-999-4824).

We should be launching our newest podcast effort, Chasing Foxfire, this month. If you like folklore, this show will be connecting the dots between folk tales, science, nature, pop culture, literature, and more.

If you have feedback you’d like to share, email us or leave a comment. We’d love to hear from you!

  1. From the feedback question about altars, some good books might be The Encyclopedia of Spirits and The Encycolpedia of Mystics, Saints, & Sages, both by Judika Illes
  2. From the question about divination, Aeclectic Tarot has wonderful comparisons and reviews of different tarot and oracle decks. You can also check out the Rabbit Tarot that Laine mentions, and our free Cartomancy Guide if you’re interested in playing cards.
  3. We had a question related to spinning wheel magic, which was based on our discussion from Podcast 25.
  4. Velma Nightshade asked a question about the Biblical Magic episode. Cory mentioned the Book of Pagan Prayer (though I intended to refer to the Pagan Ritual Prayer Book), both by Ceisiwr Smith.
  5. We mention Oraia Helene as a great resource for information on the martial arts and magic.
  6. We answered some questions in regard to our Secrecy & Silence posts.
  7. Check out the Book Reviews post mentioned as part of the “learning hoodoo” discussion.
  8. The “learning hoodoo” discussion also mentions a series of posts from us (starting at Blog Post 29), and several books that can help a person get started:
    1. Spiritual Cleansing and A Century of Spells, by Draja Mickaharic
    2. Mules & Men, by Zora Neale Hurston
    3. Hoodoo Herb & Root Magic, by catherine yronwode
    4. The Voodoo Hoodoo Spellbook, by Denise Alvarado
    5. Conjure in African American Society, by Jeffery Anderson
    6. Black Magic, by Yvonne P. Chireau
    7. Master Book of Candle Burning, by Henri Gamache
    8. Secrets of the Psalms, by Godfrey Selig
  9. We also used an email from VII at Magic & Mundane to jump into a discussion of being new to a particular path.
  10. You can now request Card Readings from Cory via email, if you are so inclined.

We’ve got a Spring Lore Contest going on until March 21, 2012! We’re looking for Springtime Lore this time around: seed planting rituals & customs, fertility charms, spring cleaning spells, etc. Anything and everything related to Easter eggs, baby animals, April showers, and (shudder) bunnies. Send your entries to compassandkey@gmail.com to enter, and be sure to put “Spring Lore” in your subject line.  Three participants will win one of three prizes: a copy of Etched Offerings: Voices from the Cauldron of Story from Misanthrope press (an anthology of pagan fiction featuring stories from several podcasters like Oraia Helene, Saturn Darkhope, & me!), an email card reading from Cory, and a goody box from Compass & Key Apothecary featuring several of our oils, curios, and mojo bags. More details coming soon!
