Cory does mention the upcoming Witch With Me book club, if you’re interested in participating in that!

We have covered divination in a few previous posts that might be worth revisiting:

Cory also has a book on playing card divination called 54 Devils that you might be interested in if you’re thinking about working with that system. He also mentions the book It’s All in the Cards, by Chita St. Lawrence (out of print but still available second-hand).

If you want to know more about geomancy, there’s a great video featuring Dr. Al Cummins that discusses geomancy as a divination system and its connection to magical ecology on YouTube.

Episode 189 – Of Correspondences and Collections

We dig into the herbs and crystals section of our book club, which leads to a bigger conversation about correspondences. We also talk about the ways we gather our magical tools and objects into our lives (in response to the amazing #regionalwitchcraftchallenge done by Via Hedera). We do card pulls for the month and get some messages about balance, detachment, indulgence, and fantasy, then hear a listener mail about a fascinating Greek practice. We top it all off by deciding how we’d summon each other!

We talk a good bit about magical tools, objects, and collections, inspired by the #regionalwitchcraftchallenge started by Via Hedera over on Instagram.

Thanks to listener Jay for the email about the Ktesios jar! You can read more about them over at Theoi’s article on them.

Laine uses the Literary Witches Oracle for her reading this time, and Cory is using the Tarot Mucha (as well as playing cards). We both reference the book Seventy-eight Degrees of Wisdom, by Rachel Pollack.

Announcement! – Everyday Magical Objects Contest Giveaway

Greetings to all you magically-minded folk out there!

In our most recent episode, we sort of came up with an idea for a contest on the fly, and asked you to send us ideas of unusual or particular items you’ve got lying around that you’d like to find a way to work into a spell somehow. Many of you are already sending us your ideas, which is wonderful, but we thought it would be a good idea to announce the contest a little more formally and let you know just what it is you’re entering for a chance to win. And so, here are the official rules!

Everyday Magical Objects Contest Giveaway

**Ways to Enter**

  1. Send us your magical object idea via email (you can try via social media, but we can’t guarantee we’ll get it that way). Please send just one object at a time, and give us enough of a description of the object that we know exactly what it is. If you can, give us some context, like what kind of magical practice you follow (so that when we come up with a response, it might actually be useful to you). This is definitely not a “stump the chumps” situation—that would be too easy with us!—so send us things that you genuinely want to know about. You can send us as many as you like, but each person can only be entered once for sending in an idea.
  2. If you’re a sponsor of ours on Patreon at any level, $1+, you’ve already got one free entry! If you become a sponsor before the contest deadline, you’ll also get the free entry.
  3. Share one of our episodes (a favorite or one you think others should hear) via social media and tag us for an additional entry! (We’re on Facebook and Twitter, so make sure you’re using the tags appropriate to those mediums or we won’t know you’ve shared anything).

That gives you the chance to get up to three entries per person! (Please note, prize winners must be located someplace where it is legal to ship the contents of the prize packs from the United States)

**What You Can Win**

We’re going to give away two different prize packs, each chosen randomly from our selection of entrants (NOTE: If you win one prize pack, you cannot win the other one, sorry!).

Crafty Cards Prize Pack

This prize pack will contain:

  • A signed copy of Cory’s card-reading book, 54 Devils
  • A deck of Wylie Beckert’s Wicked Kingdom playing cards (see the images above and check out her website, as these cards are gorgeous and perfect for cartomancy!)
  • A deck of the Fantod Pack, cards inspired by and drawn from the work of grim children’s author Edward Gorey, interpreted by Madame Groeda Weyrd
  • A free email-based card-reading from Cory! Ask your questions, receive answers from the great beyond! (or at least from Cory at his computer)

Wicked Stories Prize Pack

This prize pack contains things from or inspired by weird or magical stories:

  • A copy of the excellent and terrifying graphic novel Wytches, by Scott Snyder and Jock
  • A deck of Wylie Beckert’s Wicked Kingdom playing cards, which tell their own strange story
  • Several CDs from the Florida Folklife Collection, packed full of blues, bluegrass, and plentyof murder ballads
  • A “Dracula, Lord of Cunning” spellwork candle from Coventry Creations, based on both the character from Bram Stoker’s book and the Vampire Tarot by Robert M. Place

Both prize packs may also get a few extra goodies in them, too! If these prizes sound appealing to you, we’d love for you to enter to win!

The deadline for getting your entries to us will be Midnight, EST, Friday September 1st, 2017.

Blog Post 179 – Book Release: Fifty-Four Devils

Folks, I’m really and truly happy to announce I’ve finished the expansion of the old cartomancy guide and it is officially released for your purchase and perusal!

The book is called Fifty-Four Devils: The Art & Folklore of Fortune-telling with Playing Cards. It contains all of the basics found in the old PDF booklet, plus some significant expansions. From the back cover:

Ye are twenty-five cards.
Become twenty-five devils
Enter into the body, into the blood, into the soul .”

So begins a nineteenth century Italian charm making use of a small deck of playing cards. This brief-but-richly drawn book explores the practice of divination by playing cards—known as cartomancy. It reveals the “secrets in plain sight” which hide within the pips, kings, queens, and jokers of a standard deck. Explore one method of divination in-depth as you meet the “fifty-four devils”—the symbolic spirits of each card—and learn about invoking ancestral blessings for card readings, the folklore of playing cards, and how to relate fairy tales to a spread along the way.

How is it different from its previous incarnation? For starters, it’s longer, coming in around 108 printed pages. It also has loads of new sections and subjects to cover, including:

  1. Preparing your cards for divination
  2. The use and inclusion of the Jokers in readings
  3. An easy-to-use table which puts keywords related to each card on a single page
  4. A widely expanded set of sample readings
  5. An entirely new type of spread, the Grand Tableau or Full Deck Spread, which uses all 54 devi…er, cards

Two of my favorite new elements—and I am obviously a bit biased—are the section about how to relate fairy and folk tales to card readings to enhance divination and the 20-page appendix which contains a wide variety of folklore on card reading (including short commentaries and even a little historical fiction by yours truly). I also really love the cover, which was designed by my lovely wife!

If you’re a fan of cartomancy or divination, I think you’ll like this book. And if you’re a fan of this show/site, I think the same will be true for you. This also gives you an opportunity to support the show as well, and at $6 or less a pop, you can’t go wrong, right?

I’ve made it available in print and e-book format, and you can get a copy at any of the sites below:

Available from:
Amazon.com
Amazon.co.uk
CreateSpace Storefront
Smashwords (for all e-readers)
Kindle

On a related note, the sidebar of the blog/website now contains a button showing the cover of Fifty-Four Devils which will take you to our digital Book Shop, where you can currently find all the purchase information on this book. Over time I’ll be adding other books there as well. Hopefully some will be more of my own books, but I’ll also link to works I cite frequently and to books by authors who have appeared on the show or contributed to the blog. Any purchase you make helps us out just a little bit, so it’s a great way to support us while getting great books!

I’m very happy to be able to share this book with you all! Please let me know what you think of it, and happy reading!

With gratitude and blessings,

-Cory
