      I have to admit, I only recently found your old show, Dark Side of Fey, and I’m loving listening to that. I saw that you’d made a transition in your life and started Spiritscast as well, so I’ve got that downloaded to my iPod, too and will hopefully listen to it some time this week. I’m sure I’ll enjoy it just as much as you’re enjoying our show!

2. Hey guys, love the show. It’s refreshing to finally see an informative, fun podcast about non-Wiccan witchcraft.
   I noticed that you frequently reference Harry Hyatt’s books on Hoodoo, and wanted to know if you owned a copy, or if there is an online version. I was curious since these books are hard to come by, and when you do find one, they cost a pretty penny.

      Thank you for the lovely compliment on our show! I’m glad you’re enjoying it.

      As far as the Hyatt books go, sadly I don’t have any of them in physical form yet. But there’s a wonderful Yahoo! group which transcribes large swaths of these texts with complete citations: it’s the HyattSpells group and it’s fantastic! Dara does a wonderful job making individual spells available to readers (it’s not really a posting forum for the most part, but a great resource for anyone without access to the actual Hyatt volumes).

3. Hey guys, great show once again. I actually know why walking under a ladder is bad luck.

   The idea of walking under a ladder, or in between two or more people that are talking is that you enter liminal space. Now liminal space isn’t bad, and in fact it is the space that is most often used in sorcery and magical practice (the space of a cast circle is an example of liminal space). It is the space that is “betwixt and in between,” if you will.

   Entering liminal space leaves you open for entering into “crossed conditions,” which is like a spiritual funk. The evil eye is an example of being “crossed,” or bestowed with this funk.

   Now this isn’t saying that walking under a ladder or opening an umbrella in the house and the like will automatically make you crossed, but it does raise the chances.

   This is because this is liminal space in which you aren’t supposed to be. If you walk between two folk talking, that is liminal space they created, and you are invading it.

   Obviously some crossed conditions can happen easier than others. Being rude and cutting between people can earn you the “stink eye,” aka the evil eye, and being in their liminal space makes it a pretty effective jinx, even if it is unintentional.

   So to sum it up, walking under a ladder is to enter liminal space, as a ladder is path way from the ground to a fixed point higher up. The proper use of it is to walk up the ladder, not go under it through the liminal space that is created by the transition.

   This is all based on things that I have picked up in various places, so no real academic source is available that I know of that I can cite. It works for me though :D.

   Oh and a way to remove crossed conditions was adopted by the catholic church, the idea of “crossing” oneself. If you feel like you might have become crossed, just perform a crossing of yourself. Good old spectacles, testicles, wallet, watch. 🙂

   1. Hey Odom, great info! I’ve not heard it summed up like that before. I know what you mean about walking between two people talking, though. That always feels very strange and forbidden. Have you ever found any folkloric references to the idea of those places as liminal space? (You know I’m a nut for references and folklore, hahaha).

      It’s funny how the “crossing” oneself phenomenon works so well even outside of a Christian context. I feel like it puts up an instant barrier to anything harmful. I also think it’s funny that we can “uncross” ourselves by “crossing” ourselves.

   As always, loved listening to you both. Thank you for the van van recipe! Had two out of the five ingredients..the rest are on order 😉

   Sadly I cannot remember all of the thoughts I had while listening to this show. 😦 But I do remember about the horseshoes, I had heard as a kid that normal people had to hang the horsehoe points up, and only blacksmiths could hang it points down.

   Look how short my two bits was today! 🙂
